Ella sits at 1,000m in Sri Lanka's hill country, connected to the coast by one of the world's most scenic train rides. It's cooler, greener, and quieter than the south coast. A perfect two-day detour from the beaches. Hike to Ella Rock at dawn, tour tea factories in the afternoon, and watch the Nine Arches Bridge train pass at sunset.

• Book train tickets online 30 days in advance. They sell out fast.
• Ella is cold at night, even in summer. Bring a hoodie or light jacket.
• Short on time? Do Little Adam's Peak instead of Ella Rock. Half the climb, still great views.
