South coast Sri LankaInclude Mirissa in My Itinerary
Mirissa: The south coast at its most magnetic.
Mirissa is where most south coast trips peak. A crescent beach backed by palm trees, a reef break that works year-round, and Sri Lanka's best whale watching departing from the harbour at 6am. It's small enough to walk everywhere, big enough to keep you busy for three days.
What to see and do
- Blue whale watching season runs November to April. Book the night before.
- Coconut Tree Hill at sunrise, before the crowds and the heat
- Secret Beach for a quieter swim. Mostly locals, no loungers.
- Friday night market with fresh seafood grilled to order
- Surf the point break at the east end of the bay. Consistent and uncrowded.
Tips from locals
- Whale watching boats leave at 6am sharp. Don't be late, they won't wait.
- The main beach gets packed by 10am. Arrive early or go late afternoon.
- Bring cash. Most beach bars and small restaurants don't take cards.
