South coast Sri LankaInclude Talalla in My Itinerary
Talalla: A quiet crescent of sand between Mirissa and Tangalle.
Talalla is a gentle crescent bay between Mirissa and Tangalle that most travellers drive right past. That is exactly why it works. The beach is long, the water is swimmable, and the handful of guesthouses along the shore keep things quiet without being isolated. A few surf-friendly waves break at either end of the bay, and there are yoga retreats tucked into the palms behind the sand. It feels like the south coast did ten years ago.
What to see and do
- Swim in the bay. Calmer than most south coast beaches, with a sandy bottom and gentle waves.
- Surf the reef break at the western end. Works best at mid tide, uncrowded even in peak season.
- Join a yoga retreat. Several small operations run daily classes and multi-day programmes.
- Walk the beach at sunset. No bars, no crowds, just palm shadows on the sand.
- Day-trip east to Tangalle or west to Mirissa. Both are under 30 minutes by tuk-tuk.
Tips from locals
- There are very few restaurants in Talalla itself. Most guesthouses offer meals, so book accommodation with dinner included.
- No ATMs in Talalla. Bring cash from Matara or Mirissa.
- The beach is unguarded. Currents can pick up on bigger days, especially at the eastern end.
