South coast Sri Lanka

Unawatuna: A sheltered bay ten minutes from Galle.

Unawatuna is a curved, palm-backed bay with calm water sheltered by a reef. It sits just 10 minutes south of Galle Fort by tuk-tuk, making it an easy base for travellers who want beach time and heritage in the same day. The strip behind the beach has restaurants, bars, and dive shops, while the Japanese Peace Pagoda on the headland offers quiet views over the bay.

What to see and do

  • Swim in the sheltered bay. The reef keeps waves small, making it safe for families and non-swimmers.
  • Snorkel or dive on the reef. Turtles, tropical fish, and a shallow shipwreck just offshore.
  • Walk up to the Japanese Peace Pagoda for panoramic views over the bay and coastline.
  • Visit Rumassala hill for jungle trails and Ayurvedic herb gardens.
  • Day-trip to Galle Fort, 10 minutes by tuk-tuk. Walk the ramparts and eat lamprais.
  • Jungle Beach, a small cove reached by a short trail through the trees. Quieter than the main bay.

Tips from locals

  • Unawatuna beach gets crowded midday. Go early morning or late afternoon for the best experience.
  • Jellyfish can appear in the bay during certain seasons. Ask locals before swimming.
  • Negotiate tuk-tuk prices to Galle before getting in. Should be around 300-500 LKR.
